Thinking of You, a puppy!blaine and kitty!kurt drabble by aspiringtoeloquence
It was so cold without Kurt.
Kurt had promised they’d be together always, and Blaine had believed him, because Kurt never lied. They sat in their box, waiting for someone to take them home, and they knew that part of the reason that no one had picked them was because they utterly refused to be separated. Kurt scratched, and hissed, and Blaine yapped so furiously that anyone who had even tried had backed off. Blaine always felt a little bit bad about it, but then he remembered that he needed to stay with Kurt. Because he loved Kurt. Kurt was his kitty, and he didn’t want to be anyone else’s puppy. Ever.
And then they fell asleep.
Blaine woke up to Kurt’s frantic meowing, and his eyes snapped open, ready to attack. Someone was holding Kurt, a human who looked like he was nice, except for the fact that he was taking Kurt away, and that made him the worst human in the world.
So Blaine started barking, to inform the human that this was not okay. Because he needed to know.
Except… this human didn’t put Kurt down.
This human was looking Kurt over, and telling the people around them that they’d been looking for a pet, and this little ball of fur might be just the ticket. If he could he’d take both of them, but as it was…
“Blaine, don’t let him! Blaine, I don’t want to leave you!” Kurt had stopped scratching now, misery written all over his face as he reached out desperately.
“Kurt, Kurt!” The side of their box was too tall, Blaine couldn’t reach up to touch him, because Kurt couldn’t leave, the human couldn’t take them away, they had a plan... they were going to be in love forever, and take naps, and Kurt was going to let him play with his yarn -
“Blaine -” The human was stepping away now, back into the crowd, and this was not happening. This could not be happening.
“I love you, Kurt! Come back!”
He got a last flash of Kurt’s eyes, little furry head frozen with sadness and panic, and then the yellow sweater disappeared into the crowd.
And Kurt was gone.
*
It was so cold without Kurt.
That night Blaine curled up in his blanket, waiting. Because Kurt had to come back. There was no way that he’d let the humans just take him. Kurt was the strongest kitty Blaine knew, and Kurt would never leave him.
But Kurt didn’t come back that night.
That was okay, though. The humans might live far away. It would take time for Kurt to come back to him. He could wait. He just needed to stay in their box, and Kurt would find him again.
Some of the humans that passed by his box the next day looked briefly over, but the puppy looked so skittish, so sad, that they all thought he’d be too much work.
Blaine waited.
*
“It’s the damnedest thing. We took him to the vet, but she said there’s nothing wrong with him, ‘cept maybe something to do with being homesick…”
Kurt wasn’t even listening. He was curled up by the window. His stomach was growling, but he didn’t care.
Blaine was alone. Blaine was in their box, with their blanket, and they had promised each other that they’d stay together. They’d promised.
Kurt hated his humans. It didn’t matter how nice they were, or how great the cat bed was. It didn’t matter how many things there were to climb, because all he could think was how much Blaine would love trying to climb them all, his little puppy legs kicking and Kurt leaped gracefully.
Kurt loved Blaine’s little puppy legs. They were the cutest.
Kurt looked over at the closed front door, where there was no catflap, and curled up tighter, trying to remember what it felt like to have Blaine’s tiny body pressed next to his.
If he closed his eyes, he could almost hear Blaine’s quiet little sleep growls.
It made his heart hurt all over again.
*
On the third day after Kurt got taken away a little girl stopped her mother as they walked past the cardboard box.
“He’s so cute, Mommy! Can we keep him? Please, can we keep him?”
Her mother took in the puppy, his eyes closed, clinging to a ratty blanket, a picture of misery.
“No, no, honey, look at him, he must have all sorts of diseases. Look how miserable he looks. I think Sandy’s dog just had some puppies, and maybe if you’re very good you’ll get one for Christmas. An nice shiny golden retriever. Would you like that?”
Blaine didn’t even hear the girl’s shriek of excitement. He was too busy trying to remember the exact color of Kurt’s eyes.
Kurt had always teased him about how forgetful he was. They’d laughed about it.
He couldn’t forget anything about Kurt. He couldn’t.
*
“…hasn’t eaten a bite without me forcing him. Can’t be normal, Carole, I’m tellin’ you.”
“… didn’t you say… others? Burt, I just… lonely… was there…back?”
“… sure… extra…”
“Better than… miserable. Look at him, honey.”
Kurt stared out the window, and every dog that passed down the sidewalk looked exactly like Blaine.
*
On the fifth day someone stopped by the box. It wasn’t until he felt someone picking him up that Blaine opened his eyes.
The man that was holding him was wearing a yellow sweater.
